I'm sorry things aren't working out the way you would want. Perhaps instead of cooking you could just have it catered? At least then you and S would have some time together.
I agree with Rachel. Go to your local grocery store and a fruit/veggie tray, meat tray and cheese tray made up. Put some crackers on another tray. I don't know if you have M&M Meat stores in the States but go buy a few different desserts to cut up and put on a platter.
I'm sorry your friend disappointed you but I hope you enjoy the shower and your visit with S. ((hugs))
